PROGRESS ON POLUTION? Changes in satelite-derived particulate matter estimates from 1998 to 2019

Despite progress in reducing pollution across developed countries, exposure to outdoor fine particulate matter (PM2.5)—a leading risk factor for mortality—remains high for much of the world’s population. Here we depict satellite-derived annual average concentrations of all ground-level fine particulate matter for all cities assessed to have a population over 300,000. You can switch between views showing the satellite derived estimates for each year, the change in PM2.5 from our baseline of 1998-2000, and the percent change from our baseline.
